8/10/2023 0 Comments Mushroom tire plugAdd cold, rain, rocks, outstretched arm, and you'll be crying for me to pass you the T handle awl. Getting thru some tires will be almost impossible with the screwdriver type Nealy especially when trying to plug a tire while on you back crawling under a Crown Vic. A traditional tire plug kit can be as compact but you'll lose some of the ability with a small screwdriver handle and a thin blade in the Nealy or similar where an awl with T handle are better served. You have a knot on the inside, and four thicknesses of cord in the hole, which works better on irregular holes.Īs a once employed tire installer I can't really agree. Withdraw the tool so that the end of the needle is clear of the tire, and cut the needle free. Pull the tool out, put the string in the tool, insert into tire, then turn the tool 1-1/2 turns (this creates a sort of knot inside the tire, and secures the repair). Stick the tool into the hole and move it around to clean out and burnish the hole a little. You use a closed-end needle to install the plug, so no open needle to catch and snag. One nice detail is that Nealey strings do not require added glue. The strings are about half the diameter and twice the length of your "standard" sticky string - they're installed in such a way that you end up with four cords in the tire, not two. ![]() And in my experience, they do work better. These work well.Īnyhoo, the Nealey string plugs are different, and they're installed a little differently. What you saw was probably a different kind of "mushroom" patch, installed from the inside of the tire. It's been on my shelf for at least ten years, and so far no takers. If you think these stupid things work, I have one of the "gun" style insertion tools I will sell you cheap. ![]() But motorcycle tires seemed to quickly slice the soft rubber mushrooms in two and work the head of the mushroom loose. I did have some success with car tires and the Stop-n-Shite plugs. ![]() Yes, I'll agree the insertion tools and such are high quality. I once had a flat about 60 miles from home and had four Stop-n-Stay mushroom heads bouncing around the inside of the tire by the time I got home. The plugs inevitably pop out after a few miles. Yes, I carried a Stop-n-Go kit for a while and they're complete shite in motorcycle tires.
